Before you read

This guide is general information to help you choose care with confidence. It is not medical advice and does not replace a consultation with a qualified doctor. For urgent symptoms, seek care immediately or call 1990 (Suwa Seriya).

Start with the right specialty

The right doctor begins with the right field. A long-standing cough, chest pain, or a child's fever each point to a different specialist. If you are unsure which type of doctor to see, your family doctor or our Doctor Finder can suggest a starting point. We never name a diagnosis; we only help you find a suitable type of care.

Check that the doctor is registered

Every doctor practising medicine in Sri Lanka must be registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), the statutory body that maintains the official register of medical and dental practitioners. A doctor's SLMC registration is the single most important credential to confirm. On Docranka, a profile that a doctor has claimed is verified against the SLMC register before the doctor can edit it.

Understand the qualifications

  • MBBS is the primary medical degree that qualifies a doctor to practise.
  • MD, MS or board certification through the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) signals specialist training.
  • Membership or fellowship of a college, for example MRCP or FRCS, reflects further specialist examination.

You do not need to memorise every title. The point is simple: more specialist training in the area you need is reassuring.

Read genuine patient experiences

Reviews tell you what qualifications cannot: whether a doctor listens, explains clearly, and treats people with respect. Read several reviews rather than one. Look for specific, calm descriptions of the experience of care, and weigh patterns over single strong opinions. On Docranka every review is moderated, and ratings come only from real, published patients.

Practical fit matters too

  • A practising hospital and location you can reach.
  • Consultation days and channelling fees that suit you.
  • Languages you are comfortable speaking.

A respectful note

A high rating is not a guarantee of outcome, and a low rating is not a finding of fault. Use reviews as one honest signal among several, then confirm the details that matter directly with the doctor or hospital before you book.
